The Problem of Making a Good Metal-To-Glass Seal

Making a reliable metal-to-glass seal for vacuum tubes is difficult due to differing thermal expansion properties. Experiments with surface treatments and flattening metal to a sheet showed varying results. The most successful seal used very thin tungsten wire, though it is not a practical conductor.
