A federal judge approved a $1.5 billion settlement requiring Anthropic to pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book for using pirated copies to train its Claude chatbot. About 91% of over 482,000 covered books have been claimed. It is the first major settlement in dozens of AI copyright lawsuits.
