NASA extended Voyager 2's science operations by at least a year by cutting power to nonessential systems and switching to lower-power alternatives. Voyager 1 will receive the same power-saving changes in coming months. Both probes launched in 1977 and rely on plutonium-powered radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
