Why China is betting on big nuclear reactors

China has nearly doubled its nuclear fleet since 2016, reaching nearly 60 gigawatts of capacity with gigawatt-scale pressurized-water reactors. The US built only two reactors at Plant Vogtle in that time. Smaller reactors attract investment, but large reactors dominate China's rapid buildout.
