Magnetized Lunar Rock Hints at Ancient Moon Dynamo

A 37-mile-wide magnetized rock in the Moon's Dewar region, described in Science Advances, is likely solidified magma from about 4.2 billion years ago. Gravity, orbital and magnetic data suggest an early lunar dynamo of roughly 11 microteslas, versus Earth's 50 today. The finding supports a long-debated ancient magnetic field but does not resolve contradictory Apollo sample records.
