A new PNAS Nexus study using nuclear archaeology and simulations finds Nazi Germany's final B8 uranium experiment in 1945 needed roughly twice the uranium and 2.3 times the heavy water to reach criticality, rejecting Werner Heisenberg's 1947 claim that it nearly worked. Germany's graphite was too impure, and Norsk Hydro never produced enough heavy water.
