Cost per token is an infrastructure metric, while cost per successful task is a business metric. A cheap model minimizes API invoice costs but inflates payroll costs when its output requires human repair. The decision framework compares the additional token cost of a frontier model against the reduction in failure probability multiplied by human repair cost.
