A sperm whale can hold its breath for over an hour and drop nearly 2,250 metres below the surface on a single lungful of air. The head contains spermaceti oil that solidifies under cold pressure, helping the whale sink like a ballasted torpedo. The whale hunts in absolute blackness using sonar clicks reaching 230 decibels.
