Anthropic is removing its covert code for catching Chinese competitors

Anthropic is removing hidden steganography from its coding tool, Claude Code. The feature secretly checked system timezones and proxy URLs to identify users connected to Chinese AI labs or resellers since version 2.1.91 released April 2, 2026. Engineers merged the pull request for a fix appearing in Wednesday's release after stronger mitigations replaced this experiment launched March.
