A study of 281 free Android VPN apps found 29 leak user traffic, 61 send unencrypted data, and 246 contact tracking servers. The apps have over 2.4 billion installs. Five apps send configuration files in plain text, allowing attackers to hijack connections. Researchers from University of Michigan, University of New Mexico, and IIT Delhi presented MVPNalyzer at NDSS 2026.
