A 2018 six-study paper by Shai Davidai and Thomas Gilovich in Emotion found that ideal-self regrets outnumber ought-self regrets by 72% to 28%. Inaction regrets remain psychologically open longer than action regrets because untested paths accumulate imagined benefits. The findings build on Gilovich and Medvec's 1994 work on temporal regret patterns.
