Windows 95 detected setup programs by checking the executable name against a list of magic words like setup, install, inst, imposta, ayarla, and felrak. Microsoft veteran Raymond Chen confirmed the OS also checked the file path for setup. If matched, Windows 95 ran cleanup checks for improperly modified system files.
