A $25 switch taught networking better than routers

A $25 TP-Link TL-SG108E managed switch taught the author more about networking than years of router dashboards. The switch forced hands-on learning of VLANs, 802.1Q settings, PVID, tagged and untagged ports, and layer 2 segmentation. Monitoring pages and Wireshark revealed hidden broadcast traffic, IGMP snooping, and loop prevention.
