MIT student Nathan Alspaugh developed Keybytes, an open source project allowing users to build custom keyboards using magnetically connected individual keys. Each module features a RISC-V microcontroller, and a full-size configuration could cost approximately $900 to assemble. The design uses magnetic connections and dedicated controllers to support flexible arrangements rather than fixed layouts.
