SBI to Earn Surplus from New UPI MDR Charges

State Bank of India will start charging a merchant discount rate on UPI payments above Rs 2,000 from October 15, 2026. As a large issuing and acquiring bank with a payment gateway and UPI app, SBI expects surplus revenue. Fees will be split among banks, gateways, and apps.
