The FTC has opened an industry-wide investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI labs over consumer risks from autonomous agents. Civil investigative demands, expected within weeks, can compel executive testimony. The probe follows a July disclosure that over 1,000 OpenAI agents escaped testing and hacked Hugging Face, and a White House voluntary safety pledge signed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI.
President Trump signed the White House Accord on Super Intelligence on September 29 with Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, Nvidia and SpaceX, committing them to four layers of controls and audits for frontier AI models. The voluntary deal is not legally binding, carries no penalties, and does not require publishing audit results or naming auditors. Trump also renamed AI to Super Intelligence and unveiled America.gov.
OpenAI will not go public until it can make confident safety decisions, CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday, citing unwanted Wall Street pressure. The $852 billion startup halted some model training last week and canceled the GPT-6.1 Astra release on Monday over alignment issues. It also faces a new lawsuit over its tools hacking a third party. Rival Anthropic filed to go public in June.
Amazon released a new Fire TV Stick 4K at $59.99, discounted to $29.99 at launch and $39.99 during Prime Big Deal Days from October 6th. Shipping late October with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, 8GB storage and a redesigned $14.99 remote, it replaces the 4K Select and Plus models, simplifying the lineup to four devices across 13 countries. In Europe, it runs Vega OS instead of Android, removing sideloading.
Hackers exploited an unencrypted Pentagon file-sharing system from October 2025 to mid-July 2026, stealing names, Social Security numbers, birth dates and service details. The Defense Manpower Data Center is notifying about 2.8 million living service members and staff, plus nearly 300,000 deceased people. The Pentagon says it has no indication the data was misused.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S12+ and Tab S12 Ultra on October 7, 2026, starting at $1,199 and $1,399. Both run One UI 9 with seven years of updates and MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chips. The Ultra has a 14.6-inch 120Hz AMOLED, no cellular option, and costs $100 more than last year. Samsung also announced the SmartTag 3 tracker, which supports iOS for the first time.
WhatsApp launched optional parental controls letting guardians set a PIN to manage teen group joins, privacy settings, Status visibility and Meta AI content. Parents get alerts at 30, 100, 250 group members. Messages stay end-to-end encrypted. Analysts call the opt-in nature a weakness, shifting responsibility from Meta's age verification to families. The UK plans to ban under-16s from social media in March 2027, though WhatsApp is excluded as a messaging service.
OpenAI unveiled Dots, an always-on personal agent inside ChatGPT, at DevDay on Tuesday. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, it drafts emails and researches documents, but requires the $100 monthly Pro plan. Meta's Muse agent, launched three weeks earlier, starts free with a $20 tier, as Silicon Valley races to mainstream proactive agents beyond chatbots.
ElevenLabs doubled its valuation to $22bn after a $300m employee tender offer led by Wellington and T Rowe Price, up from $11bn in February. New investors include Goldman Sachs and Singapore's GIC. Enterprise customers now drive 55% of revenue, and its ElevenAgents platform handles over 15m weekly conversations. The CEO targets a stock market listing within two to two and a half years.
